Recently completed egress stair at NYU Stern School of business.
I was responsible for the design of the glass treads and the steel stringers.
The structural glass treads comprise of 3 half inch thick layers of tempered glass spanning 11ft to the steel stringer.
The architects were Perkins +Will.
Analysis of "Turtle Dome" steel framed Glass atrium canopy. Contractor wished to review steel members with the desire to reduce the size of steel members and welding requirements.
We decided to utilize the perimeter member as a tension ring, thereby restraining the frame, causing the frame to act as an arch/dome rather than individual members acting as a beam.
Fly thru of the WTC Path Station by Calatrava. Can only hope to work on such a great project one day.
A sample of projects currently on the virtual boards:
Manhattan Center Productions: Renovation of TV studio @ 8th Ave 42nd street ( New Yorker Hotel)
Hudson Valley Hospital: Retrofitting of interior spaces for new Central Sterile units and MRI suites
1820's Row House in West Village : Construction of sub grade living spaces.
Much thanks to our friends at Severud Associates, a spare bib allowed me to take part in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile run in Central Park last night.
A less than spectacular 42 min time.........we were taking it easy ;-)
Next year, a degree of freedom hopes to field their own team
Interior detail of 1820's barn in Northampton Pa (now used as an artists studio). The turned ladder rungs connect into the main support posts for the roof.
All connections are by use of hickory wood pins, the pins would have been dried in a kiln, then hammered into the wood beams and posts. The hickory would draw moisture from the wood members, and swell, resulting in a tighter connection.
180 years later, looks better than new. The roof boards have been replaced, but the primary structural frame is all original.
Congratulations to our engineer, Jim Moran who just received his Washington D.C. professional engineer license.
Working with Andrew Burdick of Architects for Humanity on the potential to reuse some existing spaces in New York City Public schools as outdoor green studies/ class rooms.

Link to article on Dan Rowen, who passed recently. Many years ago I had worked with his office on the Michael Kors Store on Madison Avenue.
In particular, the store has a neat stair, a single center tube stringer, with steel plate cantilevering to create the treads.
Just received confirmation that I am now a registered Professional Engineer in the State of California.
Woo Hoo!!!
Further congratulations are in order for Aaron Onur Uras, who also passed. We sat the exam together in October 2009.
French apartment Stair : Uninhibited by railing requirements. An elegant solution concealing a structural frame/restraint system in the supporting wall.
ZoLo a.k.a. 2010, the year is starting off promising!
Stay tuned, but the ( small, cute & furry) denizens of the undergrowth of NYC architecture are scuttling about with talk of new work.
Wishing all my currently " in between projects" friends a great New Year of full employment , health insurance & credit card debt reduction.
